South Amboy Fire Police Officer Gerald Celecki, 70, was directing traffic when he was stricken.

A N.J. fire police officer collapsed while directing traffic at an incident Wednesday morning.

Gerald Celecki, 70, with the South Amboy Fire Police, received immediate treatment, but was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

He responded to a gas leak, and had just directed a firefighter backing up a truck when he fell.

The engine driver looked back, and didn't see Celecki. He found him face down on the street.

The longtime responder was treated at the scene immediately, and transported to a local hospital. However, efforts to revive him proved fruitless.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
