June 5--The U.S. Fire Administration has announced the line of duty death of Lake Station firefighter David Jatczak, who died Thursday night following a call.
The 57-year-old Jatczak, a lieutenant who was a 38-year veteran of fire service, died at his home several hours after making an emergency response call, according to the USFA.
The USFA said the official cause of death was still pending, but WTHR reported that Jatczak collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest.
According to Jatczak's obituary, he had been with the Lake Station volunteer department for nine years after previously serving as deputy chief with IUPUI in the Indiana state university system. He also spent time with the College Park and Greenbelt fire department's in Maryland.
He is survived by his wife Brenda, sons Bobby Jatczak and Brian Jatczak, daughters Traci Gillis and Tina Gillis, 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
