A former New York City firefighter has lost his battle with 9/11-related cancer.
NY1 reports that retired FDNY firefighter Jimmy Martinez, who spent weeks helping recovery efforts at Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks, lost a long battle against bone marrow cancer at age 58 on Thursday.
The Staten Island native, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, was lauded by the department for donating a 10-passenger van to the Fire Family Transport Foundation to help transport other first responders diagnosed with cancer to and from their treatments.
A wake for Martinez is being held Tuesday and Wednesday at the John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home in Eltingville, and funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Clare's Church.
