PA Community Donates Almost 2,000 Bottles to Volunteer Firefighters

Jul. 19--When the Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department asked for water, it found the community's generosity was overflowing.

Last month, the department posted on Facebook that it needed bottled water to help keep firefighters hydrated when responding to calls on hot summer days.

Since then, the department has received more than 80 cases of water -- 1,920 bottles worth.

"It's amazing, you put a little blurb out, and the people in the city of Greensburg really stepped up," said Chief Thomas Bell.

Knights of Columbus Greensburg Council 1480 donated a pallet of water -- 40 cases.

The water goes a long way, Bell said. "We've got plenty of water from it, and it helps."

The bottles are shared among the department's six stations. Every fire department vehicle carries a cooler stocked with water.

The donated water might be especially appreciated this weekend. The region is under a National Weather Service heat advisory through 8 p.m. Saturday, with temperatures in the 90s that will feel about 10 degrees hotter thanks to high humidity.

Several fire companies across the region have asked residents for water this summer, including Kiski and North Apollo.

Water is an easy, low-cost way for residents to help out their fire departments, Bell said.
