Sept. 25, 2019
Doctors for Anne Arundel County Fire Capt. Donald Kelley worked for three hours to repair his coronary arteries, which were blocked between 70 percent to 80 percent.

A Maryland firefighter who collapsed over the weekend while getting ready to respond to a fire had surgery to unblock his coronary arteries.

Anne Arundel County Fire Capt. Donald Kelley, 62, fell unconscious at the department's Lake Shore station in Pasadena as he was dressing to go out on a call just before 1 p.m. Sunday. He was found on the floor of the apparatus bay by other firefighters, who then called 9-1-1 and began performing CPR.

Kelley was taken by paramedics to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. He was later transferred to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he was in stable condition on Monday.

According to the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Kelley had suffered a heart attack at the station. Fire Chief Trisha Wolford told WJZ that doctors spent three hours surgically repairing Kelley's four coronary arteries, which were blocked between 70 percent to 80 percent.

Wolford added that the surgery went well and that Kelley was recovering.

Kelley is a 33-year-veteran with the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and is the commander for the Lake Shore fire company.
