Off-Duty FL Firefighter, Daughter Critically Injured in Crash

July 9, 2020
Boynton Beach Fire Capt. Jeff Power and his daughter were airlifted to the hospital following a three-vehicle collision along US 1 near Marathon that was caused by an iguana in the road.

An iguana in the road was the catalyst for a three-vehicle, head-on collision on U.S. 1 near Marathon that left a Boynton Beach firefighter and his daughter hospitalized in critical condition.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon near mile marker 70 when a car traveling south stopped suddenly to avoid hitting the lizard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A box truck rear-ended the car and subsequently swerved into the path of an oncoming black pick-up truck driven by Boynton Beach Fire Capt. Jeff Power. He and his daughter were airlifted to Jackson South Hospital in Miami.

The FHP is continuing its investigation. There was no immediate word on whether charges would be filed against any of the drivers.

Boynton Beach Fire Rescue confirmed Powers and his family were involved in a collision, and colleagues were requesting prayers for their recovery.
