A retired Saint Michael fire chief was struck and killed in his driveway last week by a Wright County Sheriff’s deputy.
Harold Welter, 84, was struck in his driveway while taking out his garbage by a deputy's vehicle responding to a medical call on icy roads.
The Minnesota State Patrol was requested to investigate the fatal crash, KARE11 reported.
Welter served on the fire department for 23 years and was a member of the local Lions Club for 50 years. Welter also served four years as mayor and was a city council member for 10 years, according to a press release by the City of Saint Michael.
