PA 9/11 Fire Chief's Family Asks for Help

Dec. 28, 2021
Family and friends are seeking assistance for former Shanksville Fire Chief Terry Shaffer, who requires a heart transplant.

The fire chief who responded to the crash of United Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA, on Sept. 11, 2001 and helped his community recover from the tragedy is now in need of some assistance.

Terry Shaffer, 66, is listed for a heart transplant at UPMC Presbyterian due to advanced heart failure.

The fundraising campaign, Heart4Terry, hopes to raise funds for Shaffer, who was fire chief of the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department and led the Flight 93 response and recovery in Shanksville.

Over the past few years, Shaffer’s health has been on decline limiting his ability to actively participate in family and community events.

“A successful transplant means a chance for my dad to see his grandchildren grow up and to continue serving the community he loves," said Terry’s son, Adam Shaffer.

The average heart transplant costs over $1 million dollars, Adam shared. Insurance with cover the bulk of expenses, however, after care and lifelong medications will require financial assistance.

Additional details and tax-deductible donations can be made for Shaffer here.

Donations can also be mailed to:
National Foundation for Transplants
3249 W. Sarazen’s Circle, Ste. 100

Please include “In Honor of Terry Shaffer” in the memo line.
