An FDNY firefighter reached a settlement with New York City after contracting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2019, which is linked to his work at the World Trade Center site.
Brian Kevan chose to sue the city instead of filing his claim through the federal Victims Compensation Fund, which was used by most 9/11 responders, according to a report by the New York Post.
Like many of his fellow firefighters, Kevan worked at the toxic pile of ruins for months, digging for survivors and remains, and was forced to retire in 2019 due to his cancer diagnosis.
Kevan was able to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant in November when physicians were able to locate a donor.
With the funds received in the settlement, Kevan plans to start a foundation to help others address their needs when affected by crippling diseases.
