Man Admits to Manslaughter in Fire That Led to NY Chief's Death

A New York man pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in connection with the line-of-duty death of an assistant fire chief.

Forestburgh, NY, Assistant Chief William 'Billy' Steinberg, 37, suffered a heart attack at the scene of the Jan. 15, 2021 house fire in Thompson.

Mohammed Islam, who also pleaded guilty to burglary and arson, is being held in Sullivan County Jail, The Times Record-Hearld reported. 

Authorities said Islam used wood and paper to set the fire in a dresser drawer in the unoccupied summer home. 

Sentencing is set for Dec. 19.
