South Richland Fire Chief Matt Hanenkrath was doing what he loved Tuesday afternoon when he collapsed.
Hanenkrath was checking doors on a house to gain access to check for possible victims when he suddenly went down, The Crescent News reported.
He was conscious and alert before he was transported to the hospital.
"I talked to him at the scene and told him I would see him at the hospital, and when he got there they were trying to save him," Defiance County Sheriff Doug Engel told reporters.
In addition to being the fire chief, Hanenkrath, 41, was director of Defiance County's 9-1-1 Center.
He also was elected president of the Ayersville Local School Board of Education.
Funeral services have not been announced.
He is survived by leaves wife, Ashley, and three children, Haleigh, Brynn and Bentley.
