The emergency lights and siren were activated on the Clovis Fire Department vehicle when the incident occurred.

A Clovis Fire vehicle responding to an emergency call on Fourth of July struck and killed a pedestrian in the roadway Tuesday night, officials reported.

The incident took place about 9 p.m. on southbound Clovis Avenue near Barstow Avenue, said Clovis police spokesman Ty Wood.

The fire department vehicle was not a fire truck, but either a pickup or an SUV, Wood added. Such vehicles are usually driven by a supervisor, but it was not immediately known who was at the wheel.

Emergency lights and siren were activated on the vehicle at the time, according to Clovis Police.

Information about the pedestrian killed was not immediately available.

Wood said the California Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation of the incident.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Clovis were closed for several hours during the investigation.
