MS EMT Hit, Killed on Highway; Driver Charged with DUI

ASAP EMS EMT Mary 'Katie' Pipkins was rendering aid to a woman when she was struck.

A driver suspected of being under the influence struck and killed an EMT rendering aid to a victim along an Alabama road. 

Mary "Katie" Pipkins, 30, with ASAP EMS of Mississippi, was treating a woman when she was hit by a vehicle, Operations Manager Rusty Hembree said in a statement. 

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crew was returning from a transport in Mobile, AL when they stopped at the crash to help.

“Miss Pipkins was a hero in every way. Miss Pipkins set a standard in EMS for others to follow. Her love and compassion knew no bounds," Hembree wrote. 

Mobile Police charged Michael Thomas with manslaughter, assault and felony driving under the influence, WDAM reported.
