Rome — A firefighter has drowned in heavy rains in the Puglia region of southern Italy, officials said on Wednesday.

The 59-year-old man died after his SUV was swept away by floodwater near the town of San Severo, authorities said.

The man was said to have been trying to rescue other drivers caught in the high water when he died.

There was also heavy rainfall in other Italian regions, such as Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, with several rivers bursting their banks.

Firefighters responded to flooding across many Italian communities as the intense storms that earlier battered Central and Eastern Europe began reaching Italy on Tuesday.

Heavy periods of rain, including cloudbursts, are expected in large parts of Italy until at least until Friday.
