Robert Bork, 75, a 44-year member of High Bridge Fire Department, was hit near the elementary school while working for the police.

High Bridge firefighters are mourning the loss of a devoted member who was hit and killed Wednesday while working as a crossing guard near an elementary school.

Robert Bork, 75, was struck about 12:10 p.m. Wednesday by a vehicle that was headed south on County Route 513, The Patch reported.

Bork, who was employed by High Bridge Police Department, was hit in an intersection shortly before noon and prior to students being dismissed from school.

He was flown to an area trauma center where he died.

The driver, who has not been identified, stayed at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

High Bridge fire officials announced Bork's death on the department's Facebook page: "In Bob's lifetime he was a Soldier, Trooper, Husband, Father, Park Ranger, Scout Leader, and Firefighter. But knowing him there was some more titles I am missing.

Bob your kindness and leadership will be missed, and your stories will live on at HBFD through the years as each generation will hear and pass them along. We ask that all of our supporters and community keep Bob and his family in your prayers. Today when gathered with family and friends, break out the best whiskey you got and toast the memory of Robert Bork, and be Thankful that people like him exist."
