Supplies of personal protective equipment FDNY firefighters have been wearing during the coronavirus pandemic "dangerously low," according to a department official.
Commissioner Daniel Nigro told NBC News that the department only has enough gear for weeks and not months. So far, 46 firefighters and EMS personnel have contracted the virus, he added.

None of the department members were infected from exposure to a patient with COVID-19, an FDNY spokesperson told NBC.
"All that we can hope for is that the pleas from the governor and the mayor have been heard in Washington and that a supply stream will open and that we will get the equipment that our members need to operate safely," Nigro said.
