Recent legislation passed by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Donald Trump authorizes $100 million dollars in Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funds for first responders to purchase badly needed protective gear.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act—also called the CARES Act—is providing the funding to FEMA for distribution through the AFG program for fire departments in need of purchasing personal protective equipment and related supplies.

"As fire departments provide life-saving emergency medical response to more and more communities impacted by COVID-19, FEMA AFG is offering an additional funding opportunity for the fire service community to purchase urgently needed protective equipment and supplies," FEMA said in an announcement.

FEMA says that a new application period will soon open to apply for the funds and recommends frequently checking the AFG website for more announcements.
