Nomination Period Extended for the Heather Schafer Memorial Scholarship

April 1, 2022
The scholarship recognizes emerging leaders in public safety who are committed to improving the fire and emergency services in the areas of health, safety, recruitment, retention, department culture, and emergency response.

Training is the most requested resource from National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) members, but costs can be a concern. The NVFC is making it easier for members to attend training events through the Heather Schafer Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will cover up to $1,500 in expenses related to attending the Health & Safety Training Summit or the Recruitment & Retention Experience. The deadline for nominations has been extended to May 1, 2022.

Sponsored by ADT, the Heather Schafer Memorial Scholarship recognizes emerging leaders in public safety who are committed to improving the fire and emergency services in the areas of health, safety, recruitment, retention, department culture, and emergency response. Four recipients will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship for travel, lodging, meals, and registration fee.

The NVFC’s Health & Safety Training Summit takes place June 24-25 in Orlando, FL, and focuses on critical issues impacting the wellbeing of volunteer responders. The Recruitment & Retention Experience takes place September 16-17 in Mesa, AZ, and addresses staffing challenges and solutions to help volunteer and combination departments thrive. Both events feature classroom sessions, keynote speakers, and opportunities for networking and idea-sharing. Participants take the knowledge they gain back to their departments to help enhance the department’s initiatives.
