Update: GA Firefighter Partially Ejected, Killed in Fire Truck Rollover Crash
A Georgia firefighter was killed when the fire truck in which he was a passenger crashed Thursday.
Ware County Firefighter Bobby 'Blue' Smith, 24, was in the officer's seat of the rig, 4JAX reported Saturday after police released more information.
The engine veered off the road for unknown reasons and spun counterclockwise as it flipped across the roadway before hitting a tree and landing on its passenger side in the ditch, according to Georgia Highway Patrol.
“Traffic. You know, a lot of people don’t get out of the way, you know, run the lights and sirens and really just trying to get there quickly, you know, to help the citizens that call but also do that safely,” Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Union President Randy Wyse told reporters as he described the dangers of responding.
Visitation is planned for Sunday from 5-8 p.m, at Miles-Odum Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday at Central Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Bennett Cemetery in Millwood.
