Shooting Suspect Had Beef with One AL Firefighter

July 14, 2023
Birmingham Police did not say which firefighter had the dispute with the suspect.

The suspect who shot two Birmingham firefighters Wednesday morning had an ongoing beef with one of them.

Detectives have not said anything else about the nature of the conflict nor which firefighter knew the suspect, WVTM reported.

Meanwhile, Firefighters Jamel Jones and Jordan Melton remain hospitalized.

New to the job, Melton had surgery the day of the incident and remains in critical condition while Jones is in serious condition.

A reward of $15,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Station 9 in the Norwood community has been closed. Crews are running out of the station in Inglenook.

Firefighters are taking the incident hard. They're still trying to process.

“Just shocked that someone would just come to a station like that and shoot our brothers. We never thought that someone would attack our personnel the way they did yesterday,” Battalion Chief William Lipscomb said.

Lt. Catina Williams added: “We have received calls from all over the state, all over the country. Different departments up north have reached out to us. So, it's definitely a brotherhood and sisterhood, you know, when we hurt, they hurt.”
