Bill to Expand Medical Coverage for Iowa Firefighters Dies in Senate

March 14, 2024
The measure would have recognized all cancers firefighters may get due to exposures on the job.

A bill that would have expanded disability coverage for Iowa firefighters with cancer was killed in the Senate

House File 2482 was passed unanimously by the House but it stalled in the Senate. And there's little possibility that it will move since the session ends soon, KCCI reported.

The measure would have recognized all forms of cancer as types firefighters would presumably get while on the job — many more than the current 14 types recognized.

Des Moines Association of Professonal Firefighters Board Member Aaron Johnson told reporters Sen. Jason Schultz, the bill's assigned subcommittee chair, didn't move it forward.

"What he did is keep it in the dark and keep it in a filing cabinet somewhere so it doesn't get any votes. It's not going to impact any change," Johnson said.

Schultz said he wanted a chance to see if the legislation is the best way to protect all of the state's firefighters.
