A Chicago firefighter was rushed to the hospital Sunday night after falling into a shaft from the roof of an apartment building. The fire happened just a block from the scene of the devastating 1958 Our Lady of Angels School fire that claimed 95 lives.

Firefighters were called to the 800 block of North Hamlin Avenue just after 6 p.m. and had reports of multiple occupants trapped, according to Fox32 Chicago.

Fire was showing from the second floor of the three-story building and began search efforts and fire attack.

Just 10 minutes into the call, a mayday was called when a firefighter lost their footing while operating on the roof and they fell three stories in a light shaft.

Chicago fire officials said the firefighter, who was taken to Stroger Hospital, suffered serious injuries.

One occupant told the television station they heard a loud thud when they firefighter hit the ground.

An FDNY firefighter was critically injured Friday after he fell 40 feet down a shaft during a five-alarm fire in Manhattan.

Fire officials said the firefighter was helping position a hose when the window he leaned on gave way, causing him to fall in the light shaft.

Sunday night's fire was located one block south and east of the site of the former Our Lady of Angles School.
