Three Lives Changed, Thanks to Late FDNY Firefighter

Dec. 3, 2024
Even though FDNY Firefighter Thomas Hoey's kidney wasn't a match for a colleague, his final wish came true.

Retired FDNY Lt. Kevin Williams had been waiting for a kidney for more than a year.

That's when FDNY Firefighter Thomas Hoey decided one of last life-saving gestures would be to donate his kidney to Williams.

Although his kidney wasn't a match, Williams received one from an anonymous donor days later, according to the FDNY.

Hoey, who died last May, changed the lives of three others who received organs.

Kristina Moon, widow of Firefighter Billy Moon and founder of the Billy Moon Foundation, played a key role in educating and supporting the families through the process of a directed donation.
