Police: Portland, CT, Firefighter Fatally Struck was Off-Duty at the Time

Shaun Manning, who served with Portland Fire Department and sat on the Board of Selectmen, died at the hospital.

An off-duty firefighter died Wednesday night after he was struck by a truck outside the Portland police station.

Shaun Manning, 58, was hit by the pickup about 6:30 p.m. on Main Street.

Manning was a lieutenant with the Portland Fire Department, according to WTNH.com. He also served on the Portland Board of Selectmen.

Police Officer Paul Liseo told TheHour.com that Manning was not responding to an incident when he was struck, in which it was raining.

NBC Connecticut said there was a board meeting scheduled to start shortly after he was struck.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck that struck Manning stayed at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, police said. 

Manning leaves behind a wife, daughter and three grandchildren.
