Gresham, OR, Firefighter Burned in Flashover Returns to Duty

April 3, 2025
Firefighter Spencer Tejedas' new job is mentoring recruits at the Gresham Fire Academy.

Gresham Firefighter Spencer Tejedas was welcomed with applause when he arrived at the training center Monday.

Hearing a child may be trapped in a house fire, Tejedas, without hesitation, went in to search.

He was caught in a flashover.

Tejedas spent three months in the Oregon Burn Center for treatment of the severe burns to 45 percent of his body, primarily his legs and arms, KGW8 reported.

Several fingers were amputated as a result of the injuries.

He said he is proud to wear his uniform again -- after 10 months.

In his new role, he'll be mentoring recruits at the traning academy.

"I think I have a story to tell, experiences to share," he said.
