We’ve all seen that rig, maybe it was a mutual-aid company’s or maybe it was one of our own. You open a compartment and a pry bar tumbles out and hits you in the shins. The rest of the compartment is hodge-podge of hand tools, hydraulic lines, extension cords and rope bags. The tools are dirty and shoved in with such randomness, no one could find a specific item under the best of conditions, let alone at 2 a.m.
Having the compartments in proper order will not only improve firefighter efficiency on the fireground, it will help keep tools clean and less likely to be damaged.
Maybe you have a new rig due to arrive and you want to set it up correctly. Maybe the aforementioned rig, with tools crammed everywhere, is your reclamation project this year. Either way, an organized apparatus is a key part to an organized emergency response.
