An Alabama fire station was shut down while the department investigates possible health concerns linked to the firehouse.
The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department closed Fire Station 27 on Tuesday, and it will remain shuttered while a "facility assessment" on the building is done, the department said in a statement. Before Tuesday's closing, a lawyer representing firefighters working at the station claims his clients discovered mold and asbestos in the firehouse, WIAT-TV reports.
"The health and safety for all employees is a priority for the City of Birmingham," the fire department stated Tuesday.
A contingency plan that distributes staff and equipment has been set up to ensure the city receives adequate fire and EMS service while the station remains closed, according to the department.
