Overcharged Batteries Cause Evacuation of Boston Fire Station

Aug. 28, 2021
Overcharged batteries on a spare fire apparatus caused firefighters to leave Engine 9's fire station until a hazmat crew checked the firehouse.

Firefighters at Boston's Engine 9 and Ladder 2 fire station evacuated the station after the smelled chemicals in the station Thursday.

A Level 3 hazardous materials response was dispatched to the Sumner Street firehouse in East Boston, according to NBCBoston.com.

Deputy Chief Steven Shaffer said the hazmat team detected high levels of Hydrogen cyanide and Hydrogen sulfate in the station.

After an investigation by crews, they determined that the contaminants came from an overcharged battery on a spare fire apparatus parked in the station.

Crews mitigated the situation and firefighters reoccupied the station that afternoon.
