PA Station Shuttered After Decades in Community

Lancaster Station 6, a focal point in the community, was closed by city officials who cited financial issues.

An end to an era.

That's how Lancaster Local 319 officials sum up the New Year's Day closure of Station 6.

Station 6 which has around for over seven decades was a focal part of the community. 

Mayor Danene Sorace said the decision to shutter the station came after having to decide whether to renovate or build a new it, WHP reported adding that the city says the building did not meet the minimum fire safety standards.

In addition to the fire station closure, the city unsaddled the police department's mounted unit. 

Announcing the axe was falling in Septermember, the mayor said when the American Rescue Plan funds run out, the city will be facing a $6 million deficit. irefighters with the station claim otherwise:

Firefighters who used to call Station 6 'home' are being reassigned to other stations. Volunteers as well will be hanging their gear elsewhere. 

Fire Chief Todd Hutchinson said: “Our response times have always met or exceeded industry standards and that will not change with the closure of Station 6."
