IA FF Frustrated at City's Eminent Domain Threat for Station Land

Oct. 4, 2023
Veteran Des Moine Firefighter Jason Zilk is standing firm on what he wants for his property.

Des Moines Fire Department's plan to relocate one of its stations is facing some pushback from one of its own.

That's because Firefighter Jason Zilk, who owns property where Station 4 will be constructed, says he won't accept the city's offer of $2.94 per square foot, KCCI reported adding that he thinks $4 would be a more fair price.

"I wouldn't trade a square foot of my land for nothing, and I wasn't a motivated seller, so I really didn't have any desire to sell it," he said.

The city has threatened eminent domain to get his property, which he hopes doesn't happen.

"Give me $4 [per square foot]. Let's make this go away. Don't give me $4. We'll go through the eminent domain," the 23-year veteran firefighter says.

If no agreement is reached by Oct. 12, they will be going to court.
