If there is an emergency in Flagler Estates, residents of the rural part of St. Johns County, FL, have had had to wait at least 15 minutes for firefighters and paramedics to arrive. But that's about to change.
According to First Coast News, earlier this month, the St. Johns County Commission okayed the funding for a fire station in the middle of Flagler Estates on Oliver Avenue next to the community park.
"This area is kind of a remote area," Chris Naff, the public information officer for the St. Johns County Fire Rescue Department, told reporters. "It takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes."
And according to Naff, the St. Johns County Fire Rescue Department it is getting more calls for service in Flagler Estates.
"Especially with hurricanes," Naff said. "Deep Creek tends to flood a lot during the hurricanes, so with this station we’ll be able to respond to those emergencies a lot quicker too."
Construction on the $4 million project is expected to start soon and be completed by the end of the year.
