Fire Hits Former London Fire Station Turned Luxury Hotel

Feb. 15, 2025
The high-end Chiltern Firehouse occupies a four-station building once used by the London Fire Brigade.

Fire at a five-star hotel in a former London fire station caused extensive damage.

The fire was reported at the Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone, which is known to host celebrities, royals and others seeking a high-end experience.

London Fire Brigade officials told the Mirror that the fire started on the ground floor and spread through the building's exhaust system to the roof.

"Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters have been called to a fire at a hotel and restaurant at Chiltern Street in Marylebone," the fire brigade shared early into the incident. "The ducting in the extraction system from the ground floor to the roof of the building is alight."

Witnesses told the newspaper that flames engulfed the roof of the ornate, four-story former firehouse

"We know in fact one of those who rushed to the Chiltern Firehouse this evening had been stationed in the building when it was a fire station 30 years ago," hotel owner Andre Balazs told BBC. "I am truly grateful to all of them as I am sure that this is not the Valentine's Day evening they had in mind."

Authorities said the fire was under control after five hours, where nearly 40 fire vehicles and 125 firefighters responded.

"Crews worked hard over a number of hours in arduous conditions in a complex and historically significant building," Assistant Commissioner Paul McCourt. "Firefighters successfully contained the fire to one property, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring properties."

"The roof and third floor were destroyed by the fire," the London Fire Brigade shared in a statement. "Around half of the second floor and a small part of the ground floor were damaged by the fire."

No injuries were reported, and over 100 people evacuated the building as the fire burned.

The hotel was supposed to host to host a party for the Netflix Bafta awards this weekend.
