Corondo Fire Chief Jayson Summers explained it's vital a message accompany a siren.

The Coronado Fire Department is testing a new high-tech alerting system.

While there are sirens located around the island, they contain old technoogy which doesn't allow a message to be broadcast, News 8 reported.

They're testing one that can do both.

“Sirens are sirens and when you activate one, you don't know why the siren is being activated. So, with this technology the nice thing about it is we can pre-record a message into the system and we can actually broadcast that message across the community," Coronado Fire Chief, Jayson Summers explained to a reporter.

It's important to let people know what to do not just sound an alert. It can be heard for miles.

Summers added that the department is still in the testing phase.

The system can either be mobile or positioned on polls. Residents also can receive text messages or an e-mail when the siren sounds.
