On March 17, a motor-vehicle accident with injuries with a person pinned was reported at Glenwood Avenue at Pasquotank Drive in Raleigh just before 10 p.m.
Raleigh Fire Department and Wake County EMS units were dispatched, including a fire department technical rescue assignment consisting of an engine, a ladder company, a rescue company, two squads (rescue engines), and a Battalion Chief.
The crew of Engine 6, found a sport-utility vehicle on its side, and with the driver’s area resting against a tree. The one occupant, an adult male, was pinned inside the vehicle.
Arriving EMS personnel began evaluating and treating the patient, as firefighters started an extrication process that lasted over an hour.
Rescue techniques included stabilization of the vehicle using jacks and shoring, removing the windshield and roof using reciprocating saws, removing the steering wheel ring using cutting tools, and displacing the dashboard using hydraulic spreaders.
Once extricated, the patient was transported to WakeMed.
The police report stated that the vehicle was traveling westbound, when it hydroplaned, left the roadway into the median, struck a light pole, overturned , and collided with the tree. Upon the collision, the vehicle rotated counterclockwise to its resting location.
Units on scene included Engine 6, Ladder 3, Squad 14, Squad 15, Rescue 1, Battalion 5, EMS 3, EMS 6, District 4, and a Medic unit.
