STAMFORD — Two ambulances were badly damaged and a third suffered mostly cosmetic harm during an engine fire behind the Stamford Emergency Medical Services office on Long Ridge Road Saturday night.
Chief Fire Marshal Walter Seely said the engine fire was called in to fire dispatchers at 11:09 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters got there, they found the three damaged ambulances parked close together. SEMS employees were able to drive their other vehicles to safety.
Seely said the engine compartment and cab to one of the ambulances was badly damaged. He said fire investigators believe the fire started in the engine of that ambulance and spread to a second that also suffered damage to its engine compartment.
A picture provided by Seely shows the cab in the second ambulance was not as badly damaged. Seely said the fire scorched a third ambulance, that suffered mostly cosmetic damage.
Seely said that although a determination has not been made as to how the fire started, he believes that the cause will be found to be accidental. He said that there was no indication that the fire was started intentionally.
