A must-see session has just been added to the program list for Firehouse Expo this July. The four FDNY firefighters who survived a desperate leap from the fourth floor of a building during a three-alarm blaze, will talk about their experiences on the day that has become known as "Black Sunday."
As a major snow storm swept through the New York area on January 23, 2005, firefighters were called to an apartment fire at 236 East 178 Street in the Morris Heights neighborhood about 8 a.m. First arriving units encountered fire on the third floor of a four-story multiple dwelling. As units went about their assignments, crews continued to search for extension. Crews reported a loss in water pressure as they searched the fire-floor which had undergone several renovations.
Register For Firehouse Expo NowConditions changed rapidly and fast moving flames forced several firefighters toward the windows. Without other options, six firefighters jumped to the ground. The four presenters at Firehouse Expo suffered life-changing injuries while Lt. Curtis Meyran and Firefighter John Bellew were killed.
You will hear FDNY Rescue 3 firefighters Jeff Cool and Joe DiBernardo and Ladder 27 firefighters Brendan Cawley and Eugene Stalowski talk about their experiences on "Black Sunday" and in the days and weeks during their long recovery process.
These men will forever remember the support fellow firefighters gave them during their recovery. A complete support network was setup for both their immediate family and their firehouse family.
The editors at Firehouse always stress firefighter safety and provide the "Lessons Learned" approach. "The most important lesson will come from listening to these four firefighters who really shouldn't be standing in Baltimore, and them telling the American Fire Service that many others in their position would never have come home" said Firehouse Magazine editor Harvey Eisner, who also sets up the educational classes for Firehouse Expo. "It is through their sacrifice and recovery that they explain what other firefighters need to do to prepare themselves should they find themselves in a similar situation. After watching this presentation attendees will change the way they prepare to come home alive."
Come see this presention at Firehouse Expo on Thursday July 27 at 5:15 P.M. - right after the exhibits close.
