July 02 -- Thirty years ago, Colin Stowell began his firefighting career at Fire Station 1, often called “The Big House,” in downtown San Diego.
On Tuesday, he stood in front of that same station as he was named the city’s new fire chief.
Stowell, who is currently the head of Heartland Fire & Rescue, will take over for Kevin Ester, who became the interim fire chief after former Chief Brian Fennessy left to lead the Orange County Fire Authority in April.
The city conducted a national search for the department’s next leader, but San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said, “in the end, we discovered the best choice was a familiar face.”
His confirmation hearing is expected to take place later this week, and his first day, assuming he is approved by city council members, will be on Aug. 1.
