A wrong-way driver collided with a gasoline tanker early Monday morning in Fort Worth, causing an explosion that killed the rig's driver, according to KDFW-TV.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-30 near Beach Street.

Police told the newspaper that the driver of a red pickup truck was going the wrong way when it slammed into the tanker. The tanker exploded and burned for hours.

The rig's driver died at the scene while the driver of the pickup truck was transported to a local hospital.

The incident happened on a bridge over Sycamore Creek, but due to a lack of rain, the creek is dry and a hazmat team detected little runoff or contamination from any spilled fuel.

Most of the fuel burned in the fire.

Officials say the steel support beams under the bridge may have been damaged due to the high heat from the fire and the westbound lanes will remain closed until it can be tested.

The collision is currently under investigation.
