SYLVIA, Kan. -- Firefighters battled a large brush fire just northwest of Sylvia in western Reno County for several hours Tuesday.
Fire crews were called shortly after 11 a.m. to the blaze, which affected at least 640 acres, Reno County dispatch reported.
Crews from Reno County Fire Districts No. 6 and 7, Stafford County and Quivira were called to the blaze near the intersections of Brownlee and Mills, and Trail West and Sylvia.
At 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, firefighter Travis Mathes with Reno County Fire District No. 6 said no homes or buildings had been threatened.
By 4:30 p.m., the fire was "still going" since crews were having difficulty with the wind shifting directions, said Todd Strain, Reno County emergency management specialist. He said EMS was called to stand by for "firefighter rehab."
"There are no structures that are threatened or anything like that," Bill Guy, Reno County Emergency Management director, said of the fire, adding that fire crews had it pretty much under control.
He said the sandy areas and CRP land did pose obstacles for fire trucks to navigate the area.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not available.
