Howard County firefighters tested their skills Thursday as they worked to free the driver of a dump truck that crashed into a sign post.

Emergency crews were called to Route 29 around 8:30 a.m. and encountered a MAC dump truck that left the roadway, hit a guardrail and struck an overhead sign post. The truck was hauling dirt and rocks.

The 29-year-old driver was heavily entangled in the cab as firefighters developed a plan to extricate him, according to the Howard County Police Department.

After evaluating the patient, officials called for the Shock Trauma GO-TEAM. The team consists of physicians that respond to lengthy extrication scenes to provide critical care skills.

Over 40 firefighters, including multiple technical rescue resources, worked for over two hours to free the driver.

He was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

Police officials believe a tire may have blown out.

Emergency crews remained on scene until 1 p.m
