The neighbor kicked in the door of a North Augusta apartment and found the man on the floor.

A North Augusta apartment fire sent one person to a local hospital Wednesday night, officials said.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety and the Belvedere Fire Department were called to the Ridgeview Apartment complex on Bradleyville Road about 9 p.m.

After more than an hour of dousing flames and evacuating the eight apartments in Building I, North Augusta Public Safety Sgt. Josh Priester said the cause of the fire had not been determined but an investigation would continue.

The fire started on the second floor of the building. Patricia Whiteside, who lives on the first floor, said she returned to her apartment late Wednesday and noticed smell similar to “dryer catching on fire.”

“I just poked my head out the door and saw lots of black smoke,” she said. “All I could do was cry. I was panicking.”

Whiteside said her neighbors kicked in the door to the unit above hers and pulled out a man who was found lying on the floor.
