The San Bernardino fire truck was enroute to a house fire when it was struck by an alleged drunk driver on New Year's Eve.

SAN BERNARDINO -- A suspected drunk driver injured two people and almost totally destroyed a Fire Department squad vehicle around 11 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, authorities say.

The two civilians were hospitalized, and the squad vehicle — a modified pick-up truck used for medical calls — sustained severe damage, according to firefighter Jason Buchanan.

“If it’s a total loss, it’s probably $50,000 or $60,000, and my understanding is they are going to total it out,” Buchanan said.

The two firefighters, who were on their way to a structure fire when they were hit at 9th and E streets, weren’t injured, he said.

The driver, whose vehicle was also severely damaged, was drunk and had a gun that turned out to have been stolen from Las Vegas, police Lt. Travis Walker said on Twitter.

The structure fire was extinguished without a problem, Buchanan said.
