About 12:25 a.m. Monday, firefighters responded to a fire in the 11500 block of South Lafayette Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood, said Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez.
A fire broke out on the second floor of a two-story frame house on the block, Hernandez said.
During the fire, a 54-year-old man was able to climb out on a roof off the second floor and jump, fire officials said.
The man was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. One other person was in the house at the time of the fire but was uninjured, said District Chief Larry Howard.
Firefighters put out the blaze by about 1:15 a.m. No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was being investigated early Monday, fire officials said.
