The fire department at the center of a hazing case will remain open for three months following a Monday board meeting.
Wes Curry was named interim chief of Emergency Service District No. 6. The district's chiefs were suspended after five firefighters were arrested in connection with a sexual assault at the fire station.
Curry, a firefighter with the Forreston Volunteer Department, will hold the role for 90 days, according to the Dallas Morning News.
“I know most of these guys; they’re great guys, all of them,” Curry told the newspaper. “And they just want a chance to restore their name and continue to serve the public.”
The Monday night meeting was to discuss the future of the department.
“By allowing 90 days ... we give the rest of our volunteer firemen a chance to do what is expected of them,” board member Bill Tilliland said. “I never thought anything in the world like this would ever happen, and I’m sorry that it did.”
Since the firefighters were arrested last week, Waxahachie Fire Rescue has been responding to calls in the district.
