N.Y. Firefighter Stricken at Fire, Dies

Poughkeepsie Firefighter Timothy Gunther, 54, suffered an apparent heart attack.

A Poughkeepsie firefighter died Tuesday from cardiac-related issues he experienced while fighting a fatal fire Monday night.

Firefighter Timothy Gunther, 54, was a 21-year veteran of the department.

While assisting at a house fire, he started feeling short of breath and had other symptoms that he may have been having a cardiac event, Chief Mark Johnson said. 

Gunther underwent surgery, but his condition worsened. He was removed from life support Tuesday.

His death is the first for Poughkeespie Fire Department since 1971. 

Funeral arrangments will be posted when they become available.
