Reflection Sparks Calif. Blaze

A mirrored headboard's reflection ignited a carport.

A mirrored headboard caused thousands of dollars of damage after its reflection ignited a residential carport in southwest Fresno on Sunday, the Fresno Fire Department said.

Around 4:10 p.m., dispatchers received a call from a neighbor regarding a detached parking structure and vehicle on fire at a residence in the 2300 block of South Weller Avenue, fire spokesman Hector Vasquez said. The fire was contained by 4:30 p.m.

The parking structure and car were both destroyed, Vasquez said, and there was approximately $15,000 worth of damage.

Firefighters determined the mirrored headboard, which the home’s residents place outside beside the carport, caused the fire by reflecting sunlight onto the structure.

“That was ruled the the most logical cause,” Vasquez said.

The fire was ruled accidental and no one was injured.
