Firefighters worked for nearly an hour to extinguish a blaze that caused an estimated $1.2 million in damage at a San Ysidro hotel Wednesday night, a fire official said.
About 50 hotel guests were evacuated with no injuries, said Mónica Muñoz, spokeswoman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
She said the owner of the Travelodge was able to house the displaced guests in empty rooms in the hotel complex of separate buildings.
An employee at the hotel on Calle Primera near Willow Road reported the blaze about 8:45 p.m. Fire crews saw plumes of smoke billowing from the roof of the two-story Travelodge when they arrived, Muñoz said.
Firefighters and San Diego police officers evacuated hotel rooms.
Additional fire crews were called out about 9 p.m. San Diego and Chula Vista firefighters put out the blaze about half an hour later and kept dousing some hot spots for some time.
Calle Primera and Willow Road was shut down during the firefighting efforts.
Fire investigators have not determined how or where the fire started, or how many rooms were damaged.
