OH Chief Dies After Completing Shift

Deputy Chief/Medic James Benken, 65, died several hours after completing a shift at Wyoming Fire & EMS.

The City of Wyoming Fire and EMS department is mourning the loss of a deputy chief/medic who died following his shift.

James "Jim" Joseph Benken , 65, completed a 24-hour at 6 a.m. on April 14. Around 3:00 p.m. on April 13, Benken responded to an emergency call.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, Benken succumbed to an apparent cardiac arrest around 2 p.m. on April 14.

He served with the department for 50 years and worked as a teacher before retiring in 2002, according to his obituary

Benken leaves behind his wife, Mary, son, Christopher, daughter, Cindy, and four grandchildren. 

Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. on April 18 at Wyoming Fire & EMS, 600 Grove Ave. Wyoming.

The funeral will take place at 5 p.m. on April 19 at Holy Trinity Church, 334 Burns Ave., Wyoming and there will not be a procession.
