Firefighter Dies after Collapsing at IL Structure Fire

A Dolton firefighter died after collapsing at structure fire in Harvey on Saturday.

Lawrence Matthews, 36, responded with Dolton firefighters to a mobile home fire around 1:30 p.m.

Dolton Fire Chief Steve McCain told NBCChicago.com that Matthews leaned up against a fence before collapsing on the sidewalk.

He was rushed to Ingalls Memorial Hospital where he died an hour later, officials said.

Matthews joined the Dolton Fire Department in 2009, two years after he had a heart transplant, according to Fox32Chicago.com

"He was a good firefighter. He did what was required and today he paid the ultimate price and that was with his life,” Dolton Mayor Riley Rogers told Fox32Chicago.com.

He leaves behind a wife and four children, under the age of 11.
