Jan. 23--A recently retired Baton Rouge firefighter happened to walk by a house fire Monday afternoon and rescued a child from inside, said Baton Rouge Fire Department spokesman Mark Miles.
The fire, which occurred around 3:20 p.m. Monday in the 3500 block of Washington Avenue, was the result of a faulty refrigerator, Miles said in a news release.
Residents of the house told responders they were about to leave when they heard a loud noise inside the house. One of the children went to see what the noise was and found the kitchen on fire, Miles said.
The girl tried to run but fell inside the house.
Then the recently retired Baton Rouge firefighter noticed the fire and ran inside to rescue the girl, Miles said.
Three people live in the house and no one was injured during the fire, according to the department. Red Cross was called to assist.
